This DSP Board operates as a programmable wide-band software
radio. The DSPs perform console and management functions,
while the client-designed FPGA (Field Programmable Gate
Array) DSP engine processes and manages the high speed data
path and converts it to baseband. This 22-layer circuit
board has almost 2000 components and over 400 high speed
tracks with critical length and cross-talk routing
requirements. |

System
Overview
The DSP Board consists of:
· Two Floating Point DSP (Digital Signal Processor)
sections consisting of Analog Devices Tigersharc TS201S
processor, 512MByte SDRAM, 16MByte Flash Memory, bus
decode and power sequencing PLD, USB serial port, high
speed link ports.
· Six on-board power supplies with power sequencing
logic (in Programmable Logic Device)
· Power Supply Supervisory circuitry.
· Client-designed FPGA-based DSP Engine (180,000 LE
Altera Stratix-II FPGA)
· 2GB of 533MHz DDR2 SDRAM connected to FPGA DSP Engine
· Four high-resolution RTD (Resistance Temperature
Detector) channels
· Ten 12-bit A/D (Analog to Digital) channels , eight
12-bit D/A (Digital to Analog) outputs
· 100 Base-T Ethernet port
· Two front-panel Link ports
· GPS receiver
· 5 Expansion slots, each with 16 LVDS (Low Voltage
Differential Signaling) input lines, 16 LVDS output
lines, LVDS clock input, and LVDS clock output.
Project Scope
Bolton Engineering worked with the client to create a
specification, designed the schematics and circuit
board, simulated circuit board critical tracks using
Hyperlynx, wrote VHDL PLD code for the FPGA interfaces,
debugged improperly written Altera Link Port design
core, fabricated and debugged the hardware, wrote debug
and diagnostic software, and delivered 20 working
prototypes. The first-pass boards worked perfectly and
did not require any design changes. A subsequent
revision was made with several client-requested
enhancements. |
