Consumer & Computer Projects

Bicycle Power Meter Prototype

Bolton Engineering, Inc. worked with CC Kinetics, Inc. to develop the first embedded prototype of a proprietary passive Bicycle Power Meter. Code named “The Twanger” during development, the Power Meter measures the power transmitted through the Bicycle drive chain by monitoring the chain resonant frequency and the chain speed.

Faxview Handheld Fax Machine

FaxView is a palm-sized fax machine that works cwith cellular or landline phones and allows the user to receive, read, store, and send faxes, and to retrieve and read e-mail anywhere, anytime. Reflection Technology’s FaxView personal Fax Reader is the first handheld fax viewer to incorporate a virtual display. Based on proprietary, patented technology, the FaxView uses a linear LED array to scan and project full-screen images directly on the user’s retina, eliminating the need for a costly and bulky Liquid Crystal Display (LCD).

PHANTOM® Omni™ - Force Feedback Joystick

The PHANTOM® Omni™. was SensAble Technologies’ second generation commercial haptic device. Just as video screens and soundblasters allow computer users to visualize and hear virtual objects, haptic devices allow users to feel, touch and manipulate simulated objects.

Force Feedback Joystick Controller

SensAble Technologies had built a high power force-feedback (Haptic) joystick for several years. They wanted to produce a moderate-cost desktop version in time for an upcoming show.

Brainware 200 - Personal Relaxation Device

Cognitech had spent several years researching and developing the Brainware 200, a personal relaxation device that uses a combination of pulsating lights and binaural sound to relieve stress and bring its users to a more serene state. Precisely coordinated, slowly evolving light and sound patterns gently coax users' Alpha waves to relax.

Cognitech had worked with a design firm for most of the development, but became unsatisfied as problems remained unsolved, and costs rose. Bolton Engineering, Inc. was hired to take over the project, fix these problems, and reduce cost where possible.

CO-Smoke Detector

FirstAlert had developed a variety of Smoke Detectors and CO Detectors, and needed to quickly develop a combination product. Bolton Engineering worked closely with FirstAlert to combine the functionality of two existing products, cutting months off their standard development cycle

PCI Motion Control Interface

Created a custom PCI board to interface with a PC-based motion control system.

Phased Array Microphone

Phased Array Microphones greatly improve speech recognition in speech-to-text applications by intelligently combining signals from several fixed-position microphones to “focus in” on the speaker. Acoustic Magic had been contracted to develop a customized low-power version as part of portable military language translator. Bolton Engineering created this product for Acoustic Magic by integrating key design features from several previous Acoustic Magic designs.
